Ronna Baer, See What I'm Saying (It's All About Men)
Acrylic on canvas panel
Federal Correctional Institution, Tallahassee, Florida
Ronna Baer is a self-taught prison artist who serves as an art instructor for other inmates. Imprisoned for 23 years, she is the mother of two and has grandchildren. Of her art Baer says, "I taught myself to paint to keep from going crazy. Being in prison...caused such pain and loneliness in my life. I chose to fill the void with creativity rather than destruction."
Baer's social-commentary piece See What I'm Saying (It's All About Men) (2002), features images of a mouth opened in a scream, a nuclear explosion, an automobile, a Viagra tablet, a man on top of a woman, and a death-penalty syringe. Her other work includes etchings of flowers and butterflies on leftover pieces of prison-window plexiglass. Baer also creates animal sculptures from toilet tissue and soap or from dampened saltines, and paints landscapes on rocks.
