Tammy Williams, Sadness
Oil pastel on sketch paper
Federal Prison Camp, Alderson, West Virginia
Tammy Williams, 31, is a self-taught artist serving a ten-year/ten-month sentence for bank robbery. She has been in prison eight years. Of her artwork, she states that she does portrait art and landscapes as well as the human form. Her oil pastel Sadness (2002) was created as an expression of pain and sadness. "There are large quantities of both to be found in prison," she comments, adding that "sometimes these feelings can be overwhelming, and for me the only thing to do is draw or exercise."
Her goal is "to return to college and complete my degree in fine arts/graphic design," she explains. Williams is the mother of "two beautiful daughters" ages nine and ten.
