Ted Berkey, Full Moon Rising
Oil on canvas
Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, Arizona
Ted Berkey, 53, is a prison artist with no formal art training who works primarily in oils, choosing painting because it allows him "to put more personal feelings...and ideas on canvas, to solve problems in color and composition and to make the ordinary extraordinary." A native of Michigan, he's been painting for nine years. Berkey feels it is unimportant if art is realistic or abstract. "It is more important to enjoy the...colors and shapes, to explore the lines and the moods of these very...personal experiences." he states. Berkey's Full Moon Rising (2004) depicts a "a very old tree" and offers a mood of "tranquillity and serenity."
