Lynda Baker, A Young Child
Colored pencil on paper
Robert Scott Correctional Facility, Plymouth, Michigan

Lynda Baker is a prison artist who describes herself as an "African-American woman who is self taught and blessed with artistic skill." Her artwork includes colored-pencil drawings that convey religious and social messages. She also does oil paintings.

Baker was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her religious drawings include The Pain of Jesus (2004) and Jesus Loves (2004). Other works carry social messages and address racial prejudice. Baker's Picaninny Eating Watermelon (2004) includes the words "The Little Black Child." It depicts a racial stereotype that contrasts with her drawing of A Young Child (2004).
