Russ Luncsford, Jack in the Box
Pastel pencil on 70 lb paper
Correctional Facility, Clarinda, Iowa
Russ Luncsford, 36, released from prison in 2004, is an artist who says he hopes his work moves viewers to new perspectives. His prison art features religious themes, social messages, and political-cartoon commentaries on life behind bars. It depicts the monotony of prison life and the difficulty of "holding a relationship together from inside prison walls."
His art offers humor-laced critiques of prison counseling practices, the 'lock-em-up' mentality, corrections as a money-making business, and the pursuit of worldly happiness. Luncsford explains that he is a Christian. He characterizes his artwork as a service.
